If you’re learning a language for the first time, then learning to read can be a bit of a challenge. A language encompasses many forms of communication, from speaking and writing to reading and understanding. Being proficient in one form of communication doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be proficient in another, even if it does help a bit. You must tackle each of these forms individually in order to master them, and reading is no different. Are you going to improve your reading if you spend your time talking your mouth off all day? No, you need to sit your behind down and read some books if you’re going to be a reading champ. In learning to read, as in many other things in life, practice makes perfect.

First off, learning to read entails learning the very basics first. For many languages, this means learning the alphabet. Break it down: to read a book, you need to be able to read paragraphs, which means you need to be able to read sentences, for which you need to read words, for which you need to read letters. Learn your ABCs, that is if you’re learning English. Memorize them, learn how to sound them out before you go on trying to put them together into words. Then when you’ve mastered the alphabet you can start learning familiar words you come across when you’re reading. Then you’ll begin to put those words together into sentences, and eventually you’ll find yourself being able to read long passages. It’s going to take some time to get to that level, so hop aboard the Reading Railroad and hang in for the ride.

Learning to Collect Antique Parian Ware

If you aren't familiar with the term, it can be mystifying what Parian Ware might be and why it's supposed to be a valuable collectible antique variety.

Well, one expert in the matter likes to call Parian Ware satutary porcelain – a kind of very fine porcelain that is so smooth it could be mistaken for marble of the highest grade used to make small statues with.

By most reports, Parian Ware was invented by a British creator calleld Thomas Battam in the mid-19th century. But the end of that century, it was so popular that no self-respecting Victorian home would be caught without a few beautifully-done examples – little intricate statues about a foot tall of just about anything. If you're wondering where the Parian name came from, the porcelain was thought to be so like fine marble from the Greek island of Paros (where most of the best marble for the classical statues came from) they named the porcelain after it.

If you have ever been to an upper crust home or country club, you have in all likelihood, seen a couple of examples of this art form on display. Perhaps trend started with Queen Victoria of England herself who was known to rely entirely on Parian Ware in decorating her homes and palaces. Before long, Americans visiting England always chose to bring these small porcelain sculptures back home to show how they really had been all the way there and were now sufficiently cultured (by the three days they had spent there) to be in a position to appreciate strange European art.

It seems that, because there is not a professor there lecturing you, there is more work involved in accredited online courses than there is in traditional classes. It's almost as if the university is making up for the fact that you don't have to actually go to school by making sure that as much material as possible is covered, to ensure that you get the best possible picture of a particular subject. That is one of the biggest reasons I prefer traditional courses.

One of the things a friend of mine told me that he really did not care for about accredited online courses is that, especially in the math and science classes, there is no professor to ask how to work out a particular problem. There was an instructor for the course, obviously, but if one had a question about how to solve a particular problem, they would have to submit their question via e-mail to the professor and wait for his response, which could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

They would often ask me what I thought about a particular game, and I have to admit that I would feel left out. It was odd to me that they still liked to play video games, because it was something I viewed as being kind of juvenile.

I was giving my brother a hard time about it one time and he asked me to tell him what was so much more sophisticated or mature about collecting books, which is one of my hobbies, than for him to play video games. I thought about it for a moment, and I really could not answer him. The reason I could not answer is because I had cultured myself throughout college not to look down on or make fun of other people's customs, because how we value things in society is really relative. Here I was, teasing my brother, and he was just doing something that he loved to do.

The reality of the matter is that just because I don't see the value in playing video games does not mean that there is none. Several people that I interact with on a daily basis like to play video games, and they have never once given me a hard time about collecting books.

Because of this, I really don't think it is wrong for an adult to play video games. It really should be viewed as another hobby that people can do for as long as they want.

So for a child to take his time getting ready for kindergarten is a bad idea, and redshirting doesn't work. So what does work?

A large-scale study done in Canada on dozens schools found that children who are young for their class are the ones who do best. They make more progress more quickly because there are motivated. Even a child who is a month younger can often be at an advantage. Why would this be?

How about this for an explanation – school makes kids smarter. And so, the sooner you send a kid to school, the earlier his going to feel the heat of competition and gear up all smart and motivated? For instance, a high achieving kid who skips a grade often has the incentive to do even better. They usually get farther ahead in school and in life. They also have better emotional lives overall. Basically, the rule is clear – the more challenged a child feels, the better he's going to perform.

And there is science behind it too that really supports this. The first six years of a child's life, his brain goes through some major growth and development. At no other point in life does the brain grow and organize itself at that speed. This is the time that children need to be really challenged and be put in stimulating environments.

Basically, the idea that starting a child off in school too early is some kind of silly modern-day competitive parenting thing, is just plain wrong. Send your child off to school as early as possible, and you child will thank you for it one day.
