Learning To Read Is a Path Toward Enlightenment

If you’re learning a language for the first time, then learning to read can be a bit of a challenge. A language encompasses many forms of communication, from speaking and writing to reading and understanding. Being proficient in one form of communication doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be proficient in another, even if it does help a bit. You must tackle each of these forms individually in order to master them, and reading is no different. Are you going to improve your reading if you spend your time talking your mouth off all day? No, you need to sit your behind down and read some books if you’re going to be a reading champ. In learning to read, as in many other things in life, practice makes perfect.

First off, learning to read entails learning the very basics first. For many languages, this means learning the alphabet. Break it down: to read a book, you need to be able to read paragraphs, which means you need to be able to read sentences, for which you need to read words, for which you need to read letters. Learn your ABCs, that is if you’re learning English. Memorize them, learn how to sound them out before you go on trying to put them together into words. Then when you’ve mastered the alphabet you can start learning familiar words you come across when you’re reading. Then you’ll begin to put those words together into sentences, and eventually you’ll find yourself being able to read long passages. It’s going to take some time to get to that level, so hop aboard the Reading Railroad and hang in for the ride.

When you’ve got that down, you’re ready to move to the next step: learning to read well. Sure, you might be able to read those words on the page but do you know what they mean? This is the final step before achieving reading nirvana: mastering the art of comprehension. You know how people supposedly achieve nirvana by meditating a lot? You can achieve reading nirvana by reading a lot. The more you read, the better you’ll get at it and the better you’ll understand. And once you’ve mastered reading, you’ll have achieved true understanding—being able to read things and knowing what they mean beyond the surface of words. That is the essence of communication, being able to pick up on cues beyond what is visible to the eye. And it is only something that a master of reading can access. Will you undertake this path? Good, then sit down and start reading pronto.

Battery Operated Christmas Lights, exactly What you Need

Christmas lights are usually a big deal in most households as apart from just decorating the various rooms and the Christmas tree they can be used for lighting up rooms as well. It is for this reason that one would like their Christmas lights to be powered by the most reliable source of power and one these reliable power sources are batteries. As of now, battery operated Christmas lights are among the most versatile and multifunctional compared to other kinds of lights because of their ability to be used in different ways. When these battery operated lights which are also known as party lights or fairy lights are used it means that one can their tree in any place of their choice unlike when they use electricity which may require that the tree is placed next to the nearest plug. Another thing that the family members will be saved from when they use these lights is getting their feet tangled up in the cords and extension leads that are usually associated with electricity sources. After the Christmas the lights can be kept for other uses such as wedding receptions, birthday parties and anniversaries.

Apart from the above uses, battery operated Christmas lights are great because they can help a family save on their electricity bill. Another reason is that houses that have pets or children these lights may present the safest options. This is because small children are known to be very curious about everything and their curiosity may be increased when they see the colored fleshy lights within their reach. When it comes to the batteries then one has two options and they include the rechargeable batteries and the disposable batteries. Both options are quite affordable.

When one decides to use battery operated Christmas lights for their celebrations then they will not be limited as well because there are different lights that a person can choose. For instance in terms of color they can either choose to go with plain white or they can opt for different colors. Also available are the mini lights which are the best to use for a Christmas wreaths. One can hide the batteries neatly so that they are not visible. Among the best places that one can hand their lights is on a good mirror and this can work as a centre piece when placed on the table. Another place is on mantle pieces and this can be done by draping the lights over them. In some households the lights are put over logs in the absence of fire and this helps to give them a kind of warm glow. If the celebrations are taking place outside one can drape the lights over branches and around trees, pots, on fences or alternatively they be placed in large vases so as to provide great centre pieces for the table. Go on and have a well lit Christmas with battery operated Christmas lights.

Learning to Collect Antique Parian Ware

If you aren't familiar with the term, it can be mystifying what Parian Ware might be and why it's supposed to be a valuable collectible antique variety.

Well, one expert in the matter likes to call Parian Ware satutary porcelain – a kind of very fine porcelain that is so smooth it could be mistaken for marble of the highest grade used to make small statues with.

By most reports, Parian Ware was invented by a British creator calleld Thomas Battam in the mid-19th century. But the end of that century, it was so popular that no self-respecting Victorian home would be caught without a few beautifully-done examples – little intricate statues about a foot tall of just about anything. If you're wondering where the Parian name came from, the porcelain was thought to be so like fine marble from the Greek island of Paros (where most of the best marble for the classical statues came from) they named the porcelain after it.

If you have ever been to an upper crust home or country club, you have in all likelihood, seen a couple of examples of this art form on display. Perhaps trend started with Queen Victoria of England herself who was known to rely entirely on Parian Ware in decorating her homes and palaces. Before long, Americans visiting England always chose to bring these small porcelain sculptures back home to show how they really had been all the way there and were now sufficiently cultured (by the three days they had spent there) to be in a position to appreciate strange European art.

Are you curious about how exactly they managed to make such fine marble-like sculptures out of what is essentially china clay? Well, to begin with, they don't sculpt them, of course. They mold them in standard molding cases. The special ivory-like hard, smooth opaqueness comes from the way they make their clay. It contains a great deal more of feldspar than regular porcelain. It's a color and texture that is unbelievably close to that of high-quality marble. You'll also notice that vases and other such objects created in this fashion always have the interiors glazed as well.

When you set off to buy and invest in Parian Ware, what do you look for? How do you know to tell quality and authenticity?

Typically, you want to look for Parian Ware that was crafted before 1885. Only the major makers marked or otherwise identified their products. American-made Parian Ware has considerable value as well.

Buying Parian, make sure you don't fall prey to the myth that every piece in New England comes from the famed United States Pottery Company of Bennington. Basically, it can be very difficult to tell because they all mostly used the same kinds of molds. For the best choices try the small dealers.

Reliable Ways in which to Build Blog Readership

If you run a blog, getting interesting content out on a regular basis is usually your top concern. Once you do form a strategy that helps you get that to happen fairly regularly, your next biggest worry, coming right along, is the one to do with getting readers behind your blog to make your effort worth it. There is no untapped readership resource out there. Every reader out there who could possibly be interested in your efforts already subscribes to a dozen blogs and reads everything every available moment – on their laptop, iPhone or iPad. You need to find a way to get a saturated market to pay attention to your blog; and then once they do, you want them to focus on your blog to the virtual exclusion of everything else that other bloggers say. Building blog readership can be tough.

Link building happens to be your best shot at building blog readership from scratch. This is where you find ways to place links to your blog in highly relevant places. One of the most popular sneaky ways of doing this is usually to look for forums, communities and other blogs that attract the kind of audiences who would be interested in what you have to say, and posting there. The reason this helps is, that when you post anywhere, your username will usually appear there. Make your username a link to your blog and you'll find that it makes for great advertising in a relevant forum. If you make a habit of leaving the most well-thought-out and sensitively-written responses all the time, people wonder if they can get more of the same visiting your blog. On the flipside of course, if you leave poorly thought-out (read spammy) comments on other people's forums, they'll quickly turn away in disgust.

Content aggregators and directories may not be as popular today as they once used to be. Still, StumbleUpon, Digg, Technorati and all the rest of them do have a valuable role to play in introducing your blog to a new audience. To anyone cruising by, these do present an excerpt of your blog as a sample. It can make for great publicity when you are trying to build blog readership up from scratch.

You could create low-budget YouTube videos to spread word about your blog as well. Most bloggers don't use video to publicize their blogs; if you did, you would certainly stand out. A great way of keeping people reading every installment of your blog is to offer RSS feeds. Some bloggers make creative use of their RSS feed by getting other websites to display a little feed of their headlines in one corner of their website.

If you write a blog, have you ever considered writing on another person’s blog? When you write on another person’s blog as a guest writer, you get a byline – where you get to include a link to your blog. Building blog readership takes sacrifice.

Blue Christmas Decorations

Everyone has a different idea of what they want their home and their tree to look like for the holidays. Though there are some families that use the same ornaments year after year with great success, some like to mix it up and then have something new or at least partially new each year. Though everyone has their own idea of what they want to do, one of the most popular looks would be blue Christmas decorations. Blue indicates winter and snow to some, so it only seems natural to do this in the home and on the tree. There are many great ways to do this.

Many of the best blue Christmas decorations for the tree are a light blue. This can be bulbs and garland, and of course you should never forget the lights. The blue lights you can get are usually a darker blue, but they go well with any shade of blue that you choose for your tree. Silver goes well with light blue decorations, so go ahead and get some shimmery, silver decorations to go with your blue. White is a good choice too, or you could get more dark blue, other than your lights, to go with the lighter hue.

You do not have to limit your blue Christmas decorations to your tree. You can use them throughout your home. You can get some greenery to put anywhere and then hang your blue decorations from them. Add a few blue candles in silver candle holders to this on your mantle and you have an elegant and festive touch for the holidays right there in your living room or den. If you have a nativity, you can use a blue cloth underneath to add a touch of color to tie this in with what you have done in the rest of your home.

Shades of blue are great for Christmas in many ways. If you are going to send out family cards with a family picture, you can all dress in blues and take some of your blue Christmas decorations with you, or they may have some at the studio that you can use. Whatever the case, your card can then tie in with the blue Christmas theme that you have chosen. This is one way to make it look like you have it all together, even though you are frazzled and overworked just like everyone else throughout the holidays.

Lastly, you can stretch your blue Christmas decorations theme even further if you are hosting a meal around the holidays. You can find table clothes, place settings and even glasses that will match the rest of your home. You can come up with your own centerpiece by using some of your blue decorations and anything else you desire. You probably do not want to go as far as having blue food, of course, but this will match your home. Your guests will be impressed and you are under no obligation to let them know how easy it really was to tie it all together.

Accredited Online Courses Can Be Challenging

Even though distance learning has made great strides in the last two decades, I have always preferred the traditional classroom experience. I have to admit, I can be a bit biased against accredited online courses as well, thinking them somehow inferior to courses one would take on site at a college or university. I have come to realize, though, that accredited online courses can be just as challenging, if not more so, than traditional classes.

One of the things that I found especially challenging about accredited online courses is that it requires a tremendous amount of self-discipline to complete them. There is a lot of material to cover, along with quizzes, assignments papers and tests, all of which must be completed within a timely manner. I think that I may have gotten the impression that we could work at our own pace, and to a certain extent you can. What I soon discovered, however, was that a lot was expected, and there was not a class meeting three times a week with a professor lecturing to you, which brings me to my next point.

It seems that, because there is not a professor there lecturing you, there is more work involved in accredited online courses than there is in traditional classes. It's almost as if the university is making up for the fact that you don't have to actually go to school by making sure that as much material as possible is covered, to ensure that you get the best possible picture of a particular subject. That is one of the biggest reasons I prefer traditional courses.

One of the things a friend of mine told me that he really did not care for about accredited online courses is that, especially in the math and science classes, there is no professor to ask how to work out a particular problem. There was an instructor for the course, obviously, but if one had a question about how to solve a particular problem, they would have to submit their question via e-mail to the professor and wait for his response, which could take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

I have to admit, my lone encounter with accredited online courses was enough to scare me away for good, and at the same time provide me with a whole new level of respect for such classes. There is a lot of work involved and they are certainly not something to be taken lightly. Some people thrive on them, and I know for a fact that they are really convenient for a lot of people who have busy schedules and do not have the time to sit in class three times a week. For me, however, I think I will just stick with the traditional format.

Is It Wrong For An Adult to Play Video Games?

My older brother and several of my friends like to play video games. I have never understood the fascination, and I have often wondered if it is wrong for a grown man or woman to play them. After talking to my brother and some of my friends, I am convinced that there is nothing wrong with an adult playing video games and it really should be viewed as a hobby like anything else.

When I was a little boy, I loved to play video games and would do so most days that I got off of school, at least for a little while, anyway. It was around the time of the Atari and first Nintendo, so the games today are a far cry from what I played 20 some-odd years ago. By the time I reached high school, I had really lost interest in them, but my brother continued to play them into college.

As a matter of fact, with each new version of Nintendo, or PlayStation came a new trip to the closest electronics store for my brother and some of my friends. They would often ask me what I thought about a particular game, and I have to admit that I would feel left out. It was odd to me that they still liked to play video games, because it was something I viewed as being kind of juvenile.

I was giving my brother a hard time about it one time and he asked me to tell him what was so much more sophisticated or mature about collecting books, which is one of my hobbies, than for him to play video games. I thought about it for a moment, and I really could not answer him. The reason I could not answer is because I had cultured myself throughout college not to look down on or make fun of other people's customs, because how we value things in society is really relative. Here I was, teasing my brother, and he was just doing something that he loved to do.

The reality of the matter is that just because I don't see the value in playing video games does not mean that there is none. Several people that I interact with on a daily basis like to play video games, and they have never once given me a hard time about collecting books.

Because of this, I really don't think it is wrong for an adult to play video games. It really should be viewed as another hobby that people can do for as long as they want.

Backyard Wedding Ideas to Share

Weddings are often glamorous occasions and among the factors that should be attended to add to the glamour is the venue. These days, people are choosing other alternatives to the church and reception halls for their wedding ceremonies and receptions. One such alternative is having a wedding in the backyard and so far everyone who has used the best backyard wedding ideas has had a success story to tell. The first thing for one to do when they want to have a wedding in their backyard is that they should come up with a theme. There are various themes that can really be of use to such a wedding unlike they way most people think that it is only cactus an floral themes that can work for such a wedding. To come up with the best backyard wedding theme one should incorporate factors such as tastes and preferences and their budget. Having settled these, they should then use their imagination and come up with the theme that will amaze everyone.

Having come up with the ideal theme for the wedding the next thing the couple should do on their wedding day is to ensure that there are no animals that are roaming the area. These could either be domestic animals or pets that are normally kept in the homes. If one has pets they could keep them in their kennels or have them on a leash. While most people would like to have a wedding in the open sunshine, one of the safest backyard wedding ideas is to put up a tent. This is because there are wedding couples that have bitterly disappointed when freak storms visited on their wedding day and ruined the whole occasion. One of the two ways one can get a tent is by buying or renting a tent that is large enough to ensure that their whole wedding party is covered during any emergency that might crop up.

Since most people hold their wedding ceremonies and reception during the day it is common for them to feel that lights are not necessary. This is not entirely true as having the lights on a string and hanging them all around the doorways, windows and line arches is one of the backyard wedding ideas that will set the mood of the day and tell the guests that they are welcome to the occasion. Another idea that will bring beauty to the occasion is the inclusion of an arch or a gazebo. Either option can be tastefully decorated with the color themes of the wedding as well as some manicured foliage to make a great that will be later used as a background for those beautiful wedding picture.

Finding Healthy Dog Food to Buy on a Budget

Are you an enthusiastic dog owner? If you are one, you must remember how it was when they first were growing up and you had to provide them with full healthy meals every day. As small as they are, those little guys could really eat. And healthy dog food doesn't come cheap. So what do you do to keep your pets healthy and still keep from burning a hole in your budget?

It can be quite difficult to compare and judge competing brands of dog food. Go to the pet section of any store and there are actually dozens of brands. Most people just throw in the towel and buy whatever has the best-looking packaging. You could either check with your friends to see what their experience has been finding healthy dog food in the store aisles. Or else, you could check the Internet out for reviews of healthy dog food. Whole Dog Journal is one of the trusted ones.

The thing about some of the cheaper brands is that while you might think you're getting away with spending less, your dog just won’t be happy until he has as much nutrition as he wants. He is just going to keep asking for more. You don't really end up saving that much.

Since it's quite difficult to really judge store-bought dog food for nutrition and quality, some people just switch to homemade dog food.

Have you ever tried to rescue a lost baby bird or something and had it die on you? There are dozens of reports that turn up every year in the newspapers about how newly-converted vegans make a point of feeding their little children nothing but a vegan diet and then have their children die. The same thing happens in families that newly convert to meat-eating. For people who have always stuck to a traditional diet that is native to the local region, it can be hard to believe how much science you need to put into food preparation before switching diets.

There's nothing wrong with a vegan diet or a meat diet from a nutritional standpoint. It is just that it has to be traditional or scientific if you are to be able to survive on it. A traditional diet has been fine-tuned over the centuries to include every little thing you need to stay alive. Someone who's artificially converted to a new kind of self-designed diet simply doesn't have all of that information. And for the same reason, it can be difficult finding a well-rounded homemade diet to prepare at home when you try to feed a lost baby bird or even your own puppy dog.

There are all kinds of scientifically-prepared recipes you'll find on the Internet to make at home for your dog. And it can take quite a lot of practice to know what to include and what not to. For instance, you're never to include fruits like grapes and cherries, vegetables like onions and garlic or certain nuts feeding your dog. Look sources up on the Internet to determine what the best recipes are, and go with them. Your dog will be much healthier for it.

Learning to Buy Antiques for the First Time. Successfully

If you're just starting down the path of antique collecting for the first time, you're probably a bit anxious about making the right investment. And it wouldn't be misplaced anxiety either. The world of antiques can be uncharted waters even for seasoned collectors at times. Setting out to buy antiques, there is a certain part of common human psychology that you should really understand, recognize and appreciate – that we don't ever do anything well that we don't enjoy.

The thing is, every successful collector of antiques is able to do well in his business because he likes antiques. You could pretty much say the same thing about every area of human involvement. To be successful as when you buy antiques and sell them, you really have to know a lot about antiques. To people who aren't born with a natural degree of interest in these objects, the thought of sitting and poring over thick books to do with these objects, visiting conventions, striking up friendships with experts to pick their brain – all these can be quite unbearable. The first rule to go with if you're going to buy antiques is – go with something that you really enjoy personally – furniture, clocks, books – whatever floats your boat.

So now that you actually have something that you really enjoy, you need to really get in elbow deep in their. Actually, while successful antique collectors may be in it for the money, they do have a natural fascination for the things they collect. This is really important to the way they manage to notice things about antiques they need to buy or sell. It also helps them gain a lot of knowledge having endless conversations about antique chess sets with someone they just met on the train. Try to really educate yourself. That would be just about the most important thing to do with successful antique collecting.

You need to approach the antique business as someone who wishes to become an insider. You're not doing this while you are in this just for profit. You want to see yourself as someone who belongs. This will help you not feel intimidated by all the snooty dealers, traders, experts and so on.

About the best piece of advice you can get if you're trying to buy antiques for the first time is this – start small, and don't keep going. It's actually a mistake that people make with anything that they get into the first time. They are so enthusiastic, that they make many ill-considered buying decisions and lose lots of money right away. You need to give yourself enough time to make mistakes and learn from them. At first, try not to make more than one purchase month.

Making those purchases, remember what they say about the early bird. A lot of the time, coming by a great find is more about perseverance and simply showing up on time rather than anything exotic. If it's an antique show or anything, be sure to be the first person there. Whatever happens to be on sale on the cheap, be sure you're the one to snag it before anyone else does.

Live Christmas Tree

Though you may find that getting an artificial Christmas tree is easy because you can use it year after year and it goes up and comes down with ease. However, there is nothing quite as nice as a live Christmas tree. A fir has a great aroma that is not too strong, but adds a note of the outdoors to your home. It also has a quality of fullness and life that you cannot get with an artificial tree. The fake trees are getting better and better each year, but they will never be as nice as having a real tree in your home for the holidays. With a few tips, your tree can stay vibrant and the mess can be kept to a minimum.

Live trees produce sap that they save for the winter months. Fir or evergreen trees are traditional as live Christmas trees and are the only trees in seasonal areas that stay green all year long. You want to make sure you give your live tree a version of sap so that it can stay alive and vibrant while you use it for the holidays. Most people use a mixture of water and sugar that you should replace or add to each day. You can also use something like Karo syrup to add to your water, which offers the tree the same sugars. If you fail to water the tree, the needles will dry out and fall of rather quickly.

Because real trees are heavier and not always straight, you want to be careful to anchor your tree down. If you have a smaller tree you may not have to worry about this, but a larger, live Christmas tree will need some help, especially if you have pets or smaller children in your home. The tree can topple over if grabbed by a child or if a pet is too curious and goes after something you have hung on the tree. You can buy kits for this, or you can use eye hooks and wire to hold your heavier tree up and in position so that it stays where you want it to be.

When disposing of your live Christmas tree, you may worry about a trail of needles going throughout your home. These are next to impossible to get out of carpet and you could be stepping on them for months after you have rid your home of your tree. Instead, get a bag made just for Christmas tree disposal. This bag goes around your tree so that any needles that fall off as you take it out stay with the tree. Some new trees that you buy from lots come with a free bag that you use to get it into your home and out when you are done. These save you a lot of work and keep everything neat and tidy.

If you feel that getting a live Christmas tree every year and then throwing it out is a waste, there are a few things you should remember. Most communities collect them and then use them for mulch and wood chips in local parks. Also, you can buy a live tree that comes with roots in a bucket or container. This means you can use it for the holidays and then take it out and plant it when you are done. There are always options for recycling that ensure Christmas is not the last holiday through which your live tree can be enjoyed.

Look for and get Cabinet Refacing Supplies the Correct Way

There are people who just get up on a normal day, decide they need cabinet refacing supplies and by the end of that day they have the supplies they need. There is however another group that will look for the supplies for days on end and not get the ideal ones they need. Additionally there are people who will most of the times be found at their desk at work or at home and simply don’t have the time to look for these supplies. Apart from looking for the supplies the traditional way such as in directories or going store to store, there are non-conventional means that one could use to get the supplies of their choice. Among these options are social networks. There has been a significant increase of the people who use social networks in the past few years. This means that if one had a question and they posted it on social media such as facebook, Twitter, MySpace and yahoo, they will be speaking to millions of knowledgeable people who might help them get the supplies they want. It has worked for other people who needed other products and for helping get people into office and getting supplies to reface the cabinets should not be any different.

The use of search engines is another option that could really come in handy for a person who is looking for cabinet refacing supplies as well. All one has to do is to type in those three words and a myriad of stores and people who sell the supplies will come up. After that one can now narrow their search further in terms of the types of supplies, prices and so on. When using search engines, it will also help to use inverted commas just at the start of the phrase and at its end. This will be very instrumental in helping to find the exact needed information. Local listings on the internet can be very helpful as well. There are white pages that are dedicated to particular areas and they entail very many options from which a person can choose.

Prior to ordering any kind of cabinet refacing supplies it is important that one takes very accurate measurements. The measurements will go on to determine such things as the style to be used for cabinets. It will also help to save time as if one orders for the wrong thing they could end up having to go back for the correct supplies which can be a waste of time and money. The color of the supplies is another important consideration and this means that the color chosen should match the color scheme of the house. It is not hard getting the cabinet refacing supplies of choice as long as one puts the required time and effort into it.

How to make your Home more Energy Efficient when you don’t own the House

It's all very well to tell a homeowner that it's a great idea to put in a few home improvements to improve the energy efficiency of his home. Since a homeowner owns the place, it's his choice to order up the changes that are needed. What do you do though if you are a renter, you’re having to pay high energy bills for the energy the house wastes, and your landlord doesn't see the point? Can you learn how to make your home more energy-efficient if you don't own the place and you can't make permanent changes?

For your energy efficiency aims, the cheapest and most straightforward thing for you to do would be to get rid of all the light bulbs and to put fluorescent strip lighting or CFL lamps in in their place. Do this and you end up paying no more than a quarter of what you used to for your lighting needs. You’ll end up saving about five dollars on your electricity bill this way.

How about heating your home in the winter? What do you do if you have single pane windows and the windows are drafty as well? How to make your home more energy efficient when every window in the place let's a draft in every time there is a stiff winter breeze outside?

Have you seen how at places like Home Depot and Target, they sell those little soft sock-like bags that they call draft pillows, to stuff under your door? You can save yourself some money and make those yourself at home. All you need are a few old socks and something like rice this stuff in them. You just need to stuff each stuffed bag under every door to keep the drafts out.

If your windows fits poorly and let a lot of the winter cold in every time there is breeze, you can use duct tape to seal off all the leaky spaces on your windows. But there's a lot of energy that your windows can waste even when every source of leaked warmth is sealed off. You windows can waste heat just by transmitting all of it outside through the glass. Since you can't install double glazing in someone else's home, you can do something that's nearly as good – you can use bubble wrap.

Some people handle the problem by using shrinkwrap on their Windows. If for some reason, your window doesn't seem to be made for this kind of treatment, consider using bubblewrap as your double glazing. Most people don't realize this, but bubblewrap happens to be a great heat insulator. You just need to stick the bubble wrap directly on the glass.

A lot of energy is wasted when you use an inefficient hot-water mechanism in the bathroom. You basically need low flow shower heads that won't waste much water.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten Early (and Forgetting about Redshirting)

These days, getting ready for kindergarten can take forever for children. And it's kind of fashionable to allow this to happen too. That's the way it is with one out of ten kindergarten-age children in America. Apparently, with some parents, it's even a kind of sneaky strategy. They feel that if they do this, their children will be older and more mature than the other children and they'll do very well in school. Actually, delaying getting ready for kindergarten is so popular it even has a name – they call it redshirting (borrowed from sports).

It isn't just parents alone who do this. Teachers often think this is a good idea too. In the beginning, young redshirted children in kindergarten can really seem to perform better. But that's an illusion and it really fades quickly by the time they reach the end of elementary school. Actually, as research tells us, redshirted kids are often less motivated than regular kids, and they don't do any better in life in general. All that happens through all of this is that they are worse off by a year’s salary by the time they retire.

So for a child to take his time getting ready for kindergarten is a bad idea, and redshirting doesn't work. So what does work?

A large-scale study done in Canada on dozens schools found that children who are young for their class are the ones who do best. They make more progress more quickly because there are motivated. Even a child who is a month younger can often be at an advantage. Why would this be?

How about this for an explanation – school makes kids smarter. And so, the sooner you send a kid to school, the earlier his going to feel the heat of competition and gear up all smart and motivated? For instance, a high achieving kid who skips a grade often has the incentive to do even better. They usually get farther ahead in school and in life. They also have better emotional lives overall. Basically, the rule is clear – the more challenged a child feels, the better he's going to perform.

And there is science behind it too that really supports this. The first six years of a child's life, his brain goes through some major growth and development. At no other point in life does the brain grow and organize itself at that speed. This is the time that children need to be really challenged and be put in stimulating environments.

Basically, the idea that starting a child off in school too early is some kind of silly modern-day competitive parenting thing, is just plain wrong. Send your child off to school as early as possible, and you child will thank you for it one day.

How to Negotiate Salary Raises at a New Job

The economists were finally beginning to talk about how the recovery was picking up steam when suddenly, the credit rating crisis came around and now, they're talking about a fresh recession all over again. It looks like the first signs of life in the job market that were beginning to show are already ready to roll over and die. Needless to say, employers believe that if they offer you a job, you don't really need much more to be happy. In other words, they don't expect you to ask for anything more than they offer you. But there are ways you can learn how to negotiate salary increases with that job offer. Even today.

The first thing you want to recognize about today's job market is that if you're offered a great job, you don't want to reject it just because the pay isn't all you expected it to be. You could always accept the job and then work with those figures. You just need to learn how to negotiate salary talks.

Certainly, they aren't going to be all that happy about discussing paying you more money – seeing as how that would be difficult for them to explain to their other employees. You have to realize that the hiring decision these days isn't taken lightly. If they are actually taking the trouble to hire someone in a recession like this, they really, really want you. With that boosting your confidence, you can tell them that you realize that they need you just as much as you need them, and what can they bring to the table to sweeten the pot – in terms of better perks. Can they offer you dental, better health insurance, more days off, expense reimbursement or anything?

Learning how to negotiate salary increases in today's environment is all about expanding the offer around the fringes. For instance, how about asking for a signing bonus – in actual cash? Often, you can get thousands of dollars. You can tell them that since you are accepting a lower package than you wanted, they really do owe it to you to give you better present.

You could also ask for a performance bonus – particularly if you happen to work on a sales quota or have actual targets that you can meet. You could also ask to be compensated in stock options. Companies particularly like this kind of request – it shows them that you believe the company. Sometimes, learning how to negotiate salary packages is all about learning to put your request in other words. What is it that you want your extra salary for – perhaps to be able to afford a vacation or to buy a fancy car? How about asking for that directly at the company? Creative salary interpretations often go over well these days.

Learn Your Way around the Yamaha Acoustic Piano before You Make your Purchase

Read any of those personal-finance columns they like to publish in any standard magazine, and you often find them talking about how there are two or three huge investments that people take up to make in life – the purchase of a house, a car, college education for the children. Perhaps they should add a piano purchase to that list. In families where there is a tradition in love of music learning, a real baby grand is a major purchase that can run to nearly as much as a car costs. Let's look at some of the things you should keep in mind buying one of the most popular choices in this area – the Yamaha acoustic piano.

In a book aimed at young violin players that the Israeli virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin has written, he devotes a full page to how beautiful the violin is to look at. He says you shouldn't even touch the finish of the panels or your fingerprints will mar the polish. Which is to say that even people who have the greatest respect for an instrument of wonderful music often find themselves admiring it more for how it looks. Your first step buying a Yamaha acoustic piano would be to go around the piano dealerships, taking a good look at all the finishes available at every price level.

For instance, the GB1 Yamaha acoustic piano, which at about $9000 is the lowest-priced grand in their entire range, comes with a special option in a special ebony finish. And it's a popular option too. If you're buying a real piano, pay a lot of attention to the finish. Even if the finish doesn't really have anything to do with the real purpose you're buying a piano for, you'll find that the right kind of finish makes you a lot happier.

If you're thinking of saving a little on your purchase by going the used and refurbished route, you might find yourself thinking longingly about the individual owner option where you generally find lower prices.

If you can take the trouble to hire a Registered Piano Technician to look your potential purchases over, the lack of a warrantee might be something you could live with. Go with the retail option in a used or refurbished instrument, and you'll get that warrantee, a proper professional reconditioning, and you can expect your purchase to be delivered to your door and set up too. If you're willing to put up with the hassle, and if you hire a professional to give you the green flag, buying used from a private owner can be a great way to go.

If you're not willing to put up the money for a registered technician, with a little preparation and learning, you can usually tell that an instrument isn't in the best condition possible.

In your Yamaha acoustic piano purchase, look for notes that are out of tune, look for keys that don't play or are not smooth, open the piano and look for any new hammers that have been put in and try to see if they seem to be the same kind of material in general as the other parts. And check for any extraneous sounds – buzzes or rattles.

Buying Vintage Jewelry for Beauty and for Profit

The vintage jewelry market to most people is scary territory. Which is kind of unfortunate. If people would only step in and accept the consequences, they would find that the consequences could be exceedingly pleasant.

Well, whether or not there are customers were willing to easily experiment with vintage jewelry, there certainly are dealer who were extremely enthusiastic. It's just that in this recession, people seem more willing than they ever were before, to part with items of vintage jewelry that they got from Nana that they never use or that old brooch in the attic no one can seem to remember anything about. It makes it much easier for businesses to acquire collections at this time, the fact that there are people who wouldn’t mind a bit of cash flow.

If you would rather acquire these delectable examples of yesteryear jewelry than sell them, you'll find is that this is a great time when don't yourself. Dealers have been letting go of their collections on the cheap as well.

So what exactly is vintage jewelry – stuff that is a century old? No, that would be antique jewelry. Vintage jewelry is less ancient – more like 50 years old. Vintage jewelry, especially estate jewelry, has been growing in popularity in recent years. Collectors believe that these are all set to rise in value very quickly from this point forward. If you have anything like this, you probably get a great price for it right about now. If it's signed, you'll get twice as much.

If a beautiful piece happens to catch your eye, and you really find it to be attractive and worth owning, you do want to think about whether you're just spending money for the esthetic quality or if you have a profit motive at the back of your mind too. A piece, to be of worth as an investment has to rare, in good condition, and it has to be something people would buy.

If you have something that's signed by that maker or if you have something that is set with rubies are sapphires rather desirable stones, you could have a profit-making venture on your hands.

Of course, if you're buying vintage jewelry as an investment, you probably have authenticity concerns in mind. In this case, buying from a company that guarantees the product would be a great idea. There are such places – Beladora.com, Kazanjian Brothers and Robin Katz Vintage Jewels are names to be reckoned with.

As always, relying on your own instincts can be a great way to go. You could always hire an appraiser to look at something. But how often can you do this at $150 a pop?

Little Tricks that Help you Save money when Learning Music

People may not find much common ground in their tastes in music or even the musical instruments they tend to find the most pleasing to the ear. Even so, people do agree on one thing – that to have sounds come together in certain ways is beautiful and that they can't live without it. Learning music isn't just about learning how to put those beautiful sounds together. In many ways, learning to play an instrument, we learn memorization skills, fine motor skills and we even gain better problem-solving abilities. An education in music is just a great way to make better people of all of us – young and old.

Have you had a chance to check how expensive learning music can be these days though? If nothing less than one-on-one teacher-student sessions will do and if you're looking for a reputed teacher, it can really set you back considerably every month in teacher’s fees. But there are ways that you learn music for less.

Do you happen to have a skill that is in demand and that happens to cost a lot for people to hire? For instance, are you great at some kind of school subject or are you great with computer repair, electrical repair work, landscaping or anything? The thing is, you could arrange with a teacher to swap services. They could teach you or your child the music that you desire, and you in turn can either tutor their child in the subject you're good at or you could help them out with your skills, whatever they may be.

Traditionally, in learning music, the convention is to go with weekly classes. You only have a class a week usually because the lessons you learn with the teacher aren't the most important thing. Practicing them endlessly by yourself is. Weekly classes are quite adequate. Now they charge you by the hour learning music. If you could ask to take a fortnightly class – one every two weeks – you could easily halve the cost of what you spend. So, you get twice as much practice as the next kid before moving to the next lesson. Why should that be a bad thing?

Most people, when they think of learning music, choose to go with an experienced teacher at an established school. Have you ever considered how some people, when they can't afford dental treatment at full price, go to a dental college to be training subjects to dentists-in-training? Well, how about picking up young, advanced students of the instrument you're trying to learn? For a beginner such as yourself, the kind of training a good advanced student is capable of giving you should be quite enough.

By the time you're ready for a better teacher, you will have had time to save up.

Of course, whatever price you’re quoted at the music school, you just can't accept the first price they give you. You do have to negotiate.

Will an Upgrade to Windows 8 be a Popular Move?

When Apple first announced the iPad, Steve Jobs said in the keynote address that the great thing about it was that it ran on OS X. Microsoft is doing something similar with Windows 8. They said at the last Microsoft Build conference that the new operating system was intended to be just the one OS for both tablets that ran Windows and PCs. Which is quite a step away from how Microsoft usually does things. They usually like at least 10 different versions of the same thing. Well, if you routinely tune out when hearing about the new Windows operating system, perhaps you should listen now. There's a lot to like in Windows 8. It does things that the iPad and the MacBook should, but can't. Suffice it to say that when it comes out sometime next year, you'll be a frantic to upgrade Windows 8.

Every successful computing device out there gets that way because it has a unique feature that people need that no one else has. The MacBook air has its anemic profile, of course. But apart from that, since it's a machine that runs on a solid-state drive, it has (almost) instant-on. You press the button and a couple seconds later, it's completely ready for anything you want to throw at it. There are lots of people who want to upgrade to a MacBook Air just for that one thing. You'll want to upgrade to Windows 8 just for this one thing too. Running on a regular laptop with a regular hard drive, Windows 8 starts up in under 10 seconds.

Certainly, no one really thinks to compare iPhone's iOS with Windows Phone 7. However, there is one thing everyone loves about Windows Phone – the interface that's tile-based. It’s strange thing for a full-blown PC operating systems to mimic a phone operating system, but there it is – Windows 8 borrows the successful tile interface from Windows 7. If you're using this on a tablet, it's far more usable than simple icons. Multitasking becomes very easy too. If you're for instance looking at your Facebook newsfeed, you can just dock it to one side of the screen and switch to something else like a music video on YouTube. At the Microsoft conference, they showed a cool way to set a password without a password. You just have to set parts of the screen that you have to touch in the right sequence to unlock your computer.

Heard more about how the cloud is going to take over our computing lives than you’ve actually seen happen? Well, upgrade to Windows 8 and you’ll actually see it happen. Every Windows user gets to tap into Microsoft SkyDrive. Come to think of it, this should be a great way to control piracy.

The best sign that an upgrade to Windows 8 is a great idea? Remember how journalists always simply hate Microsoft? Vista was barely a twinkle in Microsoft's eye (eww!) when the entire journalistic community joined hands to dismiss it altogether. Well, every story that's been done about Windows 8 so far has been a very gushy one.

Popular Vacation Destinations For the Cash-Strapped Traveler

While I have always loved to travel, I have not always been in the best financial position to traipse off around the world on a whim. That is why I decided a long time ago to research and plan and discover the most popular vacation destinations for the cash-strapped traveler. Here is what I came up with a while back.

One of the most popular vacation destinations for the cash-strapped traveler that I have discovered is Denver. The reason that I say this is because the Mile High City seems to be a place where visitors can really get the most bang for their buck. Besides being a beautiful city itself, one of the things that makes Denver among the more popular vacation destinations is its proximity to so many interesting places and geographical wonders.

From Denver, a traveler has easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park, Arapaho National Forrest, and the Continental Divide, but also to the Red Rocks Amphitheater and other sources of entertainment. One is within driving distance of some of the most beautiful landscapes North America has to offer, and if you are not planning to stay long, it is pretty affordable.

Another of the more popular vacation destinations for the financially challenged tourist is our nation's capital. Washington, D.C. has so many places to go and see and the history that is available is probably unparalleled in the United States. The great thing about D.C. is that much of what one would do in terms of sight-seeing or visiting museums is either free or relatively inexpensive. I know that I can spend an entire day walking around the mall, seeing the different historical monuments.

I have found that it is typically very easy to get a flight to Washington, D.C., regardless of where you are flying from, and the airline tickets are typically not that costly. I think one of the greatest things about this country is that traveling to the capital city and seeing much of what one reads about in books, hears about on historical TV programs and learns about in the news on a regular basis is fairly inexpensive to go and experience first-hand.

One of the more popular vacation destinations for me when I was younger was New Orleans. It may seem like it would be expensive, and it certainly can be, but there are a lot of things to see and experience that don't cost a thing. For instance, a lot of bands play on street corners and in courtyards and all you really have to do is toss in a few bucks, or a few cents depending on how cash-strapped you really are, to listen to some good music!

Simple Rules for Affordable Landscaping

There are people who believe that there are two ways to keep your lawn. You either spend no money on it and ignore the fact that it looks like a trailer park, or you lavish care on it and make it look like the White House lawns. Well, of course, as with everything else that takes an extreme view of things, this is somewhat wrong. Affordable landscaping is eminently possible and it can be yours if you know how.

If you're actually trying to win awards for your landscaping, of course, that's not what we’re trying to do here. We're just trying to make affordable landscaping possible so that you and your family can enjoy your nice well-kept grounds. But even if you are trying to make everyone green with envy, these tips for affordable landscaping should help you.

What makes a person look really healthy and well-taken care of? Well, it's the well-fed look of course. And so it is with your yard. The better-fed it is, the better it looks. The best lawn feed hands-down is compost, of course. The great thing about compost we all know is that it is organic; but more importantly, it is free. Whatever you use in the kitchen at home – from apple cores to coffee grounds – throw them all in the compost heap, and you get what experienced gardeners call black gold. With a garden this healthy, you'll spend a lot less on all of the other stuff.

You're not supposed to pay less for fertilizer though. Using great homemade compost doesn't preclude the need for quality fertilizer. Get a professional to come in and spray good quality fertilizer and weedicide on your yard. Usually, for the average-sized home yard, you can expect to pay something like $70. But there is a better way to do it.

You can keep weeds off your yard by fertilizing the right way. You'll basically need to go to one of those small garden centers that are run by truly knowledgeable people. You will need to ask them about the kind of fertilizing schedule you need to work on for your local area, and you will need to ask them for the best fertilizer to go for. Usually, you'll get a much lower quote than at Home Depot and you won't have to spend on weedicide.

We live in a time when we can basically grow anything, anywhere. Get a plant that's not entirely native to your area though, and you're going to have to compensate for its lack of natural defenses by pumping the earth full of artificial fertilizer, weedicide and lots of other stuff. Do the right thing and populate your garden with local plants. You'll find that you'll run into a lot less trouble.

Shopping Cart Software Comparison – which do you go For?

At first, the idea of getting a shopping cart for your e-commerce website almost seems minor enough – like an afterthought. It's only when you actually get down to deciding how to go about it that you see how fantastically complicated it can get. For instance, do you go get a free shopping cart or a paid one? If you decide to go paid for the extra features, do you get a hosted one or should you buy one? For the most part, you get the most flexibility with a purchased solution that you host yourself. Getting one hosted turns out to be more expensive in the long run and you don't get to customize anything the way you want it either. This shopping cart software comparison should get you thinking about the three top products and shopping carts today.

Let's start with the shopping cart from Pinnacle, the Pinnacle Cart. This product, that costs $30

a month to use, is the most fully featured shopping cart product in the world. From customer management to inventory tracking, this is a feature set that you couldn't find fault with if you sat down and thought about it for a day. But this doesn't mean that it's difficult for the newbie to use. Pinnacle certainly has learned to make its software accessible. Nevertheless, a feature set this complicated simply has to be conceptually difficult for anyone to grasp. If you are only starting out, you probably should stay away from this one. For this reason, in this shopping cart software comparison Pinnacle would be your fall-back option. The Pinnacle cart gives you excellent web design options -- you get to optimize your URLs in every way, generate meta-tags for your pages, modify your CSS files from your Internet browser, design dozens of button styles for your pages and so on. You get to integrate your e-commerce website with Facebook, and you get industry standard PCI and PA data security.

ShopSite Pro, that costs $125 to buy and $125 a month to use. This is not software you download and install a computer. You just log on to the website and get going in minutes. ShopSite Pro allows you rich and detailed web design features and you don't even need web design skills to do anything. You can use the wizard to get your store online in a few easy steps. For those who want all the professional features -- credit card processing, inventory control, security -- with no professional skills, this is the product to go for.

BigCommerce is, in general, considered the most fully featured product to go for in any shopping cart software comparison, usually. Of the two products we've seen above, the first one has features to die for, and the second one has ease of use that is unmatched. BigCommerce is the product to go to when you want the best of both worlds.

Kitchen Countertops

It’s only natural for everyone to want a beautiful and attractive kitchen. A kitchen cannot be complete without a kitchen countertop hence the various materials one could choose from for their kitchen countertops. Depending on one’s tastes and capability, one can use any material they would want for their kitchen countertops. While contemplating on what to choose, one also considers the pros and cons before settling on a particular kitchen counter top material.

Starting with granite which is an extremely appealing stone. Having a granitic kitchen countertop is the foundation of a kitchen’s elegance. Granite is very hard thus assuring one of durability. It also has the capability of withstanding heat. However granite is rather expensive and on top of this it requires lots of attention in terms of maintenance. If it’s not cleaned regularly it could absorb the dirt in the kitchen. Also with granite you cannot choose your own color since it its limited in that aspect.

Another fascinating material one could choose for a kitchen countertop is wood like mahogany or cherry. Wood has staged a comeback thanks to watershed protectors. Something incredible about wood is that it adds to the warmth of the kitchen especially if the dominant utensils in the kitchen are made of stainless steel. Wood maintenance is not much of a task because it only needs oiling and sanding. Moreover unlike granite wood does not ‘hurt’ knives or other utensils. Nevertheless it has its demerits; its highly flammable, absorbs food smells and stagnant water could actually blacken the wood countertop.

Moving on to concrete, this could be chosen for a kitchen countertop as well. one of its exciting attributes is that it’s not limited in terms of thickness, it could be as thick as one wants. Again, it’s luxurious because of its tactile surface and also heat resistant .However; it needs a lot of maintenance.

Engineered stone is another type of material one could opt for a kitchen countertop. It’s extremely hard and porous too but it doesn’t have the natural look one would want for a kitchen.

Ceramic tiles are durable, easy to clean and can take hot pans. Its also inexpensive and there are a variety of colors one could use. It can however chip and crack easily and if one wants one which is custom designed, it’s quite expensive.

Soap stones have a soft feel hence a good choice as kitchen countertop. They are quite deep when it comes to color and actually stain resistant, though they crack and require high maintenance.

If one wants a contemporary look for a kitchen, one could go for stainless counters. They are heat resistant, long lasting and easy to maintain however they are noisy and have a high capability of having dents.

The condo lifestyle really works out for lots of people. It's kind of like living in a retirement community, minus the food. There's a pool, a gym, a concierge, security – you just have to worry about nothing at all. So what do you need to know? Are there any specific questions to ask when buying a condo?

When you've made your mind up that living in a condo is exactly what you need to go for, it's time to learn more about it before stepping in. You need to ask the right questions of your real estate agent, the homeowners' association, the people you'll call your neighbors one day, and so on.

It's difficult to know what questions to ask when buying condo when you don't really know the complex. Ideally, you'd like to sit in on the condo board meetings to see what kinds of problems are brought up. If they won't let you sit in on a board meeting, you can try to finagle a few meeting minutes from past gatherings to read. If the condo has an existing owner, you could just go and ask them for copies of the minutes.

It would be a bad idea to interview the condo manager – the person whose full-time job is to make sure that the entire place runs smoothly. Nothing can be worse than life in a condo where the manager is unresponsive or uncaring. Sometimes, condos have no managers at all. You just have residents coming together to make decisions. This will cost you less in maintenance fees of course. But it can be a rather difficult experience getting a motley bunch of ego-driven people to pull together who don't want to give an inch to anyone else. Basically, if a condo complex doesn't have professional management, you want to try to see if there is a better option available elsewhere.

There are a few basic questions to ask when buying a condo. For instance, since condos don't come with garages or attics, do residents get any personal storage space to put stuff in? How about homeowner’s insurance? Condos usually get a policy for the whole building. You want to take a look at the policy to see what exactly they cover. The policy shouldn’t be an old and outdated one that doesn't offer enough coverage. Ideally, the policy will cover all your belongings.

The homeowners’ association fees you need to pay can be quite exorbitant. You want to make sure that you can live with it. You'll probably have asked someone who lives there for a proper itemized breakdown of what exactly goes into the homeowners’ association fees. You don't get a tax break for this, you have to be aware. If there is a lot of delinquency when it comes to paying monthly dues, you probably don't want to get caught up in such a situation.

Basically, you need to go in with your eyes wide open when you buy a condo.

How to Write a Strong Admission Essay

As a writer, I am often asked to help with writing an admission essay to a college or university, or at the very least give advice on how to do so. I have a number of tips I always give to people when I am trying to help, and so far, the feedback has been pretty good.

The first thing I always suggest to people who have to write an admission essay is to look over the topic and spend a few days just thinking about it and how they want to approach the essay. I think it is very important to do this because invariably, one comes up with exactly what they they want to get across in their essay and also what gives the admissions board the best insight into who they are as a person.

The next thing I do is sit down with the person and create an outline of the highlights that need to be addressed. By doing this, the admission essay will have a sound structure and be easy to follow. It will keep the essay on topic and give it balance. I have found that this is a critical step, especially with academic writing, because this is not meant to be creative, it is meant to be formal and to the point.

I also believe that an admission essay should strive to have an impact with every statement. For this reason, I always encourage people that have to write an admission essay to write beyond what they think they will need, so that they can cut it down and leave out fluff. It helps when it comes to the editing process, which brings me to my next point.

The revision process is probably the most critical aspect of an admission essay. It is here that you iron out all of the wrinkles and make sure that everything is perfect. I always recommend people revise it one day, and then leave it on the their desk and come back to it the next day. Make absolutely certain that there are no grammatical or spelling errors. Make sure that there are no contradictions and that the essay has purpose.

With an admission essay, the best advice that I can give is to plan out every step. It is important to try to follow a time schedule. It is necessary to work quickly, but at the same time, allow time to accomplish all of the tasks needed to make the essay that best it possibly can be. If these steps are followed, an applicant who has to write an admission essay puts him or herself into a very good position to get accepted to a college or university.

Car Electronics Buying Guide

If you are getting set to go shopping for a GPS unit or any kind of car electronics for that matter, there were a few things you need to keep in mind to make sure you get something that's just right for you and your car. Here's what you need to keep in mind as you head into the store.

When it comes to buying technology for your car, you really need to understand that not every off-the-shelf unit is going to work successfully in every car. GPS units, car entertainment stuff -- all of these work well in a car only when they come with a proper installation kit. Without a proper installation kit for your specific model of car, you'll find that you need to cut into the car’s factory-installed wiring and struggle without the right wiring harnesses. Without a specific installation kit for your model of car, you'll also find that installing the head unit itself can be quite hard. For instance, where exactly do you put a GPS unit in your car that it'll be easy to take a look at it while you're driving? It would be great if you got a cradle for your specific model of car. That way, you wouldn't have to look long and hard to find a place in your car where a generic holder would go that would be convenient.

When buying accessories for your car electronics, buying universal one-size-fits-all models rarely works well. Try to see if the unit you're buying is popular enough that third-party accessory manufacturers actually build installation kits for your specific model of car. Sometimes, going third-party will net you a cheaper and more thoughtfully-designed accessory for your accessory.

When it comes to buying a GPS unit your car, you do know that the top brands are Garmin, Tom Tom, Motorola and Magellan; but you want to think long and hard about whether you want to buy a dedicated unit or go with one that's built to offer a combination of features. For instance, when you go with one of the major car stereo brands – Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, JVC and so on – you will often find that they come ready-built with a touchscreen GPS. Taking this route, you will be struck by how you don't really need to worry about installation kits at all.

Still, some of the top features in standalone units you find today really could make the installation hassle worth it. For instance, some standalone units from the likes of Garmin these days will offer you street-name directions. This is where the voice won't just announce that there's a left turn coming up; it will flesh it out with an exact street name. It helps to learn more about the place you're going to. Going in to buy car electronics, you basically want to research the kind of features you want and go into the store looking for the features. When the buying field is as complex as this, you don't want to limit yourself looking for a specific brand or model.

Learning what affects your Credit Score

You really do need to put your credit score front and center in life. It affects everything – from the kind of credit card and car loan you're given to the kind of job you get. That's right, apply for job today, and they check your credit score. In jobs that involve the handling of money, they wonder if someone with a poor credit score is likely to steal because he likely gets into personal financial trouble. Well, so, your credit score affects everything about your life. What affects your credit score though?

It isn't as easy a deal as you might think. Certainly, you know what affects your credit score in main – missed credit card payments, high credit card usage, getting turned down on a loan application and so on. But if you FICO credit score goes far deeper than merely this. There are lots of little things you can do that can whittle your credit score down and you wouldn't even know it. Let's take a look at what affects your credit score the most.

In main, how dependable you are at paying back your credit card balances affects a full third of your credit score. Even one late or missed payment can bring your credit score down by several points.

Are you in the habit of maxing your credit cards out sometimes? That's considered irresponsible financial behavior. And the credit score people penalize you for this. Basically, you could max out your credit card if you know that you will be paying it back the following month. How much of your credit limit you choose to use determines another third of your credit score.

There are all kinds of obscure things that go into your credit score too. For instance, would you have guessed that quitting your job and staying jobless for a time could put a real ding in your score? No, the credit bureaus don't know that you're out of a job. What they do know is that there isn't as much income coming in as before.

People think that canceling credit cards is dangerous thing because it suddenly shows the credit bureaus that they have less credit. It doesn't really work that way though. It's when you close a credit card that has a balance that you get penalized. And getting new credit isn't really great for your credit score either. Actually, if you apply for a couple of credit cards today, and then apply for a car loan next month, and then a home loan the month after that, it can put a real dent in your credit score.

It isn't just how you handle credit cards and loans that will affect your score though. Most people don't realize this, but the credit bureaus pay a great deal of attention to how good you are at paying your bills on time. Neglect to pay your phone bill or your cable bill, and the phone and cable company will tell on you. Ther’s one more reason to hate Comcast.

Spread Christmas cheer all over your home with Christmas night lights!

All of us who are Christmas enthusiasts can barely find enough Christmas decorations to herald this important, happy holiday. Well, I guess some people can go too far – I'm reminded of an episode of Frasier, where Frasier's Dad decorated every nook and cranny of Frasier's apartment with decorations dating back decades, including a life-size Santa who startled every passer-by with a loud and hearty “Ho-Ho-Ho”. However, most of us show some restraint, attempting an elegant, but tasteful look to celebrate the season.

One idea that strikes my fancy is that of Christmas night lights, placed in every room of the house. Shopping online, I've discovered a plethora of absolutely stunning Christmas night lights that will brighten up a bedroom, entry way, dining room or bathroom in quite an elegant display. Some have simple designs, while others are quite ornate. Naturally, you'll find a diversity of prices, but none will break your budget. And, after all, these can be used year after year.

Kids and adults alike find favor with these lovely little accents, and they do have a practical purpose as well. An ordinary night light can help you find your way in the dark just as well, but Christmas night lights create that special holiday ambience that reminds you of the joy of the season, even at night!

If this sounds like a worthy idea for your Christmas decorating plans, all you need do is do a Google image search on 'Christmas night lights' to see what you have to choose from – well over a million choices!

Most are made of molded plastic, colored with specially suited paints. Some of the fancier choices are made of glass. In any case, be assured there are more than enough pieces to choose from to set up your Christmas decorating plans in high style. Some of the styles are elegant, while others might be whimsical or even humorous, according to your taste and room décor.

Brightly colored candy canes, glowing candles, snuggly-looking bears, kitties and frosty snowmen may be just the thing for a child's room. Colorful mugs and cups, good-enough-to-eat pies, a red apple, or a 'candy dish' inscribed with 'I Love You' make good candidates for the kitchen, promising goodies to come soon to the holiday table.

Stars, angels, a robust Santa, or a Christmas tree may be happily installed in a dining room or bathroom. Christmas night lights in the form of wreaths, gingerbread houses or ornate tree ornaments can spread the cheer in a hallway, foyer, or guest or family room.

Of course, these are just my ideas. You can see that each of these examples of Christmas night lights may be used in just about any room you like. Have fun!

Put a wee scary festive touch in your party with a black Halloween tree!

For both kids and adults, Halloween is one fun holiday, where everyone can 'let down their hair' and don costumes designed to scare, be goofy, funny or lovely. Over the years you've been hosting Halloween parties, one trendy idea has taken hold in a big way: a black Halloween tree can make a big splash as a tabletop centerpiece for viewing, or even eating! Let's take a look at a few of the imaginative ways you can work the spooky black Halloween tree into your party décor.

One of the best edible versions comes in the form of a cake. You can use yellow cake mix, perhaps enhanced with a few drops of food color swirled into the ready-to-bake mix. Another idea kids especially favor is that of a green cake – just add a drop or two of blue food color until the desired shade of green is achieved. The frosting is where you really make the statement.

Using chocolate frosting, just add a drop or two of both blue and red, until the frosting is transformed into a rich black. Use a small (new) crafts brush to paint your black Halloween tree on to the cake – it comes out best when you paint thin, scary looking branches such as you might see in a good horror movie. (For each new color, use a fresh crafts brush to avoid having colors run.) Leave a larger space on the thicker part of the tree trunk in which to paint – with white frosting – a face that would scare you were you to be walking in the woods … add a ghosty friend or two and you're almost there. The tree roots can extend down the sides of the cake, if you wish. With your remaining white frosting, add a couple of drops of yellow and one of red food coloring to get a nice, rich orange color. Sprinkle with 'candy corn' and you've got a ghoulish black Halloween tree everyone can enjoy.

Crafts stores often carry foam or plastic trees in a variety of sizes, from table centerpiece sizes to full-blown sizes suitable for sitting in a corner of the dining room or patio. Simply spray paint the tree black and decorate with 'ornaments' made of lollipops, cookies from the bakery or even hand-decorated doilies with construction paper centers painted with florescent markers.

To add a little extra pizzazz to your black Halloween tree, you can use edible glitter – both gold and silver work well – as a special effect. As Halloween décor goes, the black Halloween tree is here to stay, appreciated by kids of all ages!

Learning how to Invest in an Antique Grandfather Clock

It might surprise you to know that clockmakers have never actually called tall clocks actuated by pendulums “grandfather clocks”. In general, people began to attach this rather picturesque name to the clock when a popular song in the late 19th century by Henry Clay Work made reference to these stately timekeeping devices as grandfather clocks. And the name stuck. Before you decide to invest in an antique grandfather clock, it would be a good idea to pick up a little bit of the clocks history and a little bit of buying advice.

The antique grandfather clock you’re eyeing at the antique store – they were originally called tall case clocks. Clocks of this design had their start at the hands of a Dutch inventor in the 17th century. He was the first one who realized that the motion of a pendulum could be used as a very accurate (by the standards of the day) timekeeper. Another inventor, William Clement, a few years later, made further refinements to the pendulum design. And the antique grandfather clock that you're already mentally trying out in every part of the lobby in your home, was born.

Buying an antique grandfather clock isn't like buying a digital watch, of course. In other words, it's kind of high maintenance. To keep these clocks running in top condition without having to yell for the clock repairman every other day, it would be a good idea if you learned a little about them yourself.

Basically, your antique grandfather clock has four important parts. The most important part is the weight – which is what powers the clock. The train is the part that takes the pull of the weight and turns it into rotary motion. The escapement turns that into regular second-long intermittent motion. And the pendulum keeps check over all of these. You need to train yourself in setting these parts up to get the most out of your antique acquisition.

When you go to buy an antique clock, your best bet for a great investment would be acquiring one of the major yesteryear brands. Back in the mid-18th century, David Rittenhouse of Philadelphia was considered one of the best clockmakers. Edward Duffield was a famous brand to. If you can find the older brands of Abel Gottey or Willliam Penn, so much the better.

When you set out to buy a clock, you're looking for the name, certainly, but you're also looking basically for how well the clock keeps time and how old it is. Basically, antique grandfather clocks have a great deal of value if they are really old, and they come from a famous maker.

When the Banks Turn Payday Loan Lender

Why is your regular street corner flashing-light-signage payday loan lender such an unacceptable site? Perhaps it's because they charge a minimum of 300% in interest. Perhaps it's because they do their best to make sure that you keep their loan for as long as you want and end up debt ridden and in poverty. Where do they get off charging people 300% or 350%? If you thought that your credit card charged you outrageous APR's, what you say about a number like this that's 10 times as much? Well, the banks and credit unions have been watching the whole payday loan thing with interest. They've been telling themselves, "You know what, we aren't really fine upstanding individuals ourselves – why don't we have a piece of that action?". And now they have actually made a move to get into the payday loans business.

In most states, there are laws in place that limit the payday loan lender businesses in what they can charge you. They can't charge you more than 35% in most states. The payday lenders still continue to charge you anything they want because there is not much enforcing going on. But it'll catch up with them one day. And so, the banks are rushing in to fill the void. They feel that if they charge you a "mere" 250%, it will bring them good publicity for being such honest lenders. And where else could they get that kind of return on their loans? But wait a minute – if the law caps interest rates charged at 35%, how are the banks able to charge 250%? Oh, there's a little caveat to that law – it applies only to smalltime lenders and not to the banks.

And so, when you treat your bank like a payday loan lender, you are a bit grateful. Why, the banks, (bless their hearts) are being so reasonable, you'll think. It would actually be more expensive if you got overdraft service from the bank – where it would cost you $35 if you went overboard by a mere dollar.

This is what happens when the government puts out a new law to try to protect consumers from the banks. They go and find a new way to make money.

Nevertheless, if you want to take advantage of such a payday loan scheme with the bank, how do you go about it? Well, you need to have a job or Social Security where your money is set up to be directly deposited in your account. They give you the money in advance when you apply for a loan. And when your paycheck arrives, the money’s taken out automatically and your loan is repaid.

Since this is kind of a new thing, there isn't much regulation in place. It looks like there's a fresh round of banking abuses coming right up.
